James, your post raises many interesting question. Questions I've thought long and hard about.

Conclusions:

.) NG will more and more come to dominate US and Canadian production, as US oil fields depelete.
.) The Saudis need BIG money to supply all these big new jobs programs, thus they will endeavor to keep prices at the higher end.
.) Higher oil prices and the NG story will cause US independents to get much bigger.
.) #'s 1 2 and 3 will keep the GOM (shallow and deep) a busy place.
.) Latam is beginning to industrialise. That will keep the SAntos and Campos basins busy.
.} China and India are well on their way to becoming modern industrial economies. They alone have the potential to suck the ME dry.
.) China and India are and will continue to drill offshore.
.) Nations in general want and need independent sources of hydrocarbons. Most of those new sources will be found offshore. National energy security issues are not trivial matters, they are central. They are not solved via SPR's.
.) The majors will NOT NOT NOT put all their eggs in the ME basket. That would be suicide.
.) There ain't enough oil.
