Dr. Hirt is planning to submit his study results for publication, and it wasn't Gum Tech that drew a conclusion from the results. Dr. Hirt is quoted as saying that Zicam significantly reduced the duration of the common cold when compared to a placebo. The study that AJIC initially agreed to publish indicated that Zicam reduced the duration of the common cold when compared to a placebo, The study also concluded that a lower concentration of zinc was more effective than the placebo, but less effective than the concentration in Zicam. The first Dr. Hirt study came to a similar conclusion. Dr. Seidman agrees with the results. So we have three positive studies and a statement from Dr. Davidson that they have NEVER gotten a negative result in any study. Now who should we believe? A biased short such as yourself or the results of three studies, two of which were independent?

<Even though the FDA requires clinical studies on products like Zicam in order to substantiate manufacturer's claims, they have NEVER reviewed even one Zicam clinical study (see GUMM's recent 424 filing on 3/13/00) nor has GUMM volunteered to let them review any data.>

Like most of your comments, this one is biased as well. You state this as if Gum Tech is intentionally trying to hide something from the FDA. The fact is that the FDA hasn't ASKED to see the clinical studies. Why would they? The active ingredient in Zicam is listed in the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States and all the ingredients are Generally Recognized As Safe according to the United States Code of Federal Regulations. Gum Tech has followed all of the FDA's guidelines and the FDA is welcome to see the data when and if they ask for it.

<So far, their word seems to be more fiction than fact. How else do account for the numerous press releases last fall claiming that Zicam was selling 4 or 5 times better than expected, yet their latest press release is almost a direct admission that sales were actually worse than expected?>

Come on, Hank! Are you ignorant or just immensely biased? The press release that you are referring to said that sales of Zicam in the FOURTH quarter 1999 were 5 times greater than sales in the THIRD quarter 1999 (at the time of the press release). This was NOT a lie! They sold $1.2 million of Zicam in the third quarter and about $8 million in the fourth quarter. They sold about 6.5 times more Zicam in the fourth quarter than in the third quarter. The recent press release is talking about sales in the FIRST quarter 00. Even though sales of Zicam at the retail level are good, retailers haven't reordered as much because they are letting inventory levels dwindle during the off-season. I'm sure that you understand the difference between retail sales and wholesale sales. Marketing data indicates that Zicam increased its share of the cough and cold market each month from December through February and was in the top 10% of sales on a SKU basis in February. Sales of all cough and cold products were lower this year than last due to the short cold season. The lower than expected wholesale sales aren't a reflection on Zicam, but the positive trend in market share is.

<How can you trust the word of management like that?>

The question is how can anyone trust someone like you who is known to despise Gum Tech and continually tries to mislead people and distort facts?

<And now we're supposed to believe that a homeopathic cellulose gel suspension is clinically proven to alleviate allergies??>

Do you know what ingredients are in the allergy remedy? Do you know if anyone has done clinical studies on it? If not, then how can you make such a naive statement? The only answer is that you are so biased that you won't even reserve judgement until you have more information to give an intelligent opinion.
