Hi/fn is more speculative than both. Their problem has been the delay in capital spending for VPNs, where their encryption/compression processors are of the highest quality and market share. The acceptance and use of VPNs is basically an inevitable event though, so Hi/fn may soon get its price helped out. Recently they've disappointed analysts with inventory issues (at DSS and Ascend) and lower than expected results. It's a long-termer, but not even close to the caliber of PMC and Broadcom, who will likely grow as fast as Hi/fn in larger markets and with larger revenue bases. As a replacement for either Broadcom or PMC, Hi/fn is not a worthy investment. As a speculative play on the vPN market, go right ahead and buy.
