M2 PRESSWIRE via NewsEdge Corporation : The Minister of State for
Communications Shri Tapan Sikdar has said that the Government is not
going to compromise with regard to the fulfillment of targets of Village
Public Telephones (VPTs) by the Basic Telephone Service Licensees.

He said that there has been no tangible performance by the private
operators in meeting the committed targets of VPTs which has adversely
affected the objective of entire rural coverage by 2002. He was speaking at
the meeting of the Fixed Service Providers which was specially convened
to discuss the commitment for providing Direct Exchange Lines (DELs) and
VPTs. Shri Sikdar told the representatives of the companies that they
should come out with firm roll- out plans before the end of this month and
meet the stipulated targets of the first three years specified in the License
Agreement immediately.

The Minister said that despite repeated commitments, the Licensees have
not even submitted the requisite roll-out plans to indicate their seriousness
as to how they propose to meet committed performance obligations. He
said neither migration package nor the National Telecom Policy-99
(NTP-99) provides for any such dilution in respect of the existing licensees.

There are six licensees namely, M/s Reliance Telecom for Gujarat; M/s
Bharti Telenet for Madhya Praddesh; M/s Tata Teleservices for Andhra
Pradesh; M/s Hughes Ispat Ltd. for Maharashtra; M/s Essar Commvision
for Panjab and M/s Telelink Network for Rajasthan circles.
