Gaston was CEO of Quarterdeck (QDEK) for about a year in 1996. QDEK's main businesses were add-in memory for PCs and some communications packages (ProComm?) they had bought. They were dying because advances in processors, Windows, and the Internet model as represented by AOL and Compuserve were killing their core businesses.

Gaston tried to move them to a suite of Internet-related products. Whether or not it was his fault, he didn't get them over fast enough and the company cratered in late 1996. Gaston jumped/was pushed when the stock had fallen by half. It fell much more before the company was bought out.

One hears that a) the QDEK owners were not supportive of Gaston's moves, also b) Gaston announced stuff, especially in the area of voice recognition, that was truly vaporware, a long way in the future.

To his credit, Gaston got a job with QDEK supplier LHSP and brought along Ellen Spooren, Anatoly Tikhman and other visionaries from QDEK. It appears to me that they have had time at LHSP to realize the dreams they shared at QDEK.
