Dear Qwik: I just took a look at that free SI membership offer and it sure looks like getting a back door, free membership to SI to me. Click on the, "No Minimum Deposit," line to jump down the page and see what I mean:
Top 10 Reasons to Join NDB
(Not including the FREE Silicon Investor StockTalk Membership.)
(1) NO DEPOSIT REQUIRED Open an account today, without depositing any money.

On the same page, in the area tooting SI, it reads:
FREE Silicon Investor StockTalk Membership ($120 annual value)
[snip]
StockTalk is what made Silicon Investor famous! It is - by far - the smartest and highest quality community on the Internet. You'll find all sorts of interesting discussion and keen insight from savvy individual investors and bona-fide stock experts. Money Magazine calls Silicon Investor StockTalk, "the upscale neighborhood in town."

Bye, bye quality.
I have no idea why the powers that be at SI would agree to something like this, but I personally would have preferred if the free SI offer was limited to new National Discount Broker accounts that were opened with some minimum (say, $2,000)--and remained open with some minimum for the entire year. Basically, open an account then move the money/securities? Kiss your "free" SI membership goodbye.
Regards,
Lynn
Edit: It now looks to me as if anyone with a NDB account can get a free SI membership, not merely people signing up for new accounts:
