the case of the disappearing speaker icon...

recently the volume control speaker icon has been intermittently dropping out of my system tray. sometimes restarting doesn't bring it back. other times a full shutdown and reboot will.

when the speaker is missing, i go to the multimedia properties dialog in control panel and the box at the bottom of the audio page that says 'show volume control on the taskbar' is grayed out, i.e. inaccessible. it would seem logical that i go there and place a check mark in that box, but i can't.

when the speaker is present, that same box is appropriately checked.

additionally, and perhaps related, sometimes the printer server icon does not appear in the systray. the printer still functions, but i note that this is another icon that seems to come and go as it pleases. and when the volume control icon is missing, i don't get audible email notification.

i have run system file checker for corrupt files. all okay. i know that there is something wrong, but i can't put my finger on it.

any ideas?

:)
