Wireless Customers Boost BellSouth
ATLANTA (AP) -- BellSouth's (NYSE:BLS - news) first-quarter earnings rose 62.8 percent to $1 billion as the telecommunications giant added nearly 1.3 million customers to its wireless business.

The telecommunications company earned 53 cents per share for the three months ending March 31, up from $615 million or 32 cents in the year-ago period.

The latest results for the Atlanta-based company include a gain from restructuring and a charge for severance. Excluding those one-time items, BellSouth earned 52 cents per share.

The results edged out Wall Street estimates of 51 cents per share, based on an analyst survey by First Call/Thomson Financial.

BellSouth stock closed at $50.06 1/4 Thursday, up 56 1/4 cents on the New York Stock Exchange.

Revenue for the quarter was up nearly 9 percent to $6.48 billion from $5.97 billion in the year-ago period.
