Sichuan vows to become an economic power

Apr 20 2000 4:18PM Homeway

Southwest China's Sichuan Province has vowed to build itself into a strong economic power in a decade.

Under a 10-year economic development plan, the province expects its gross domestic product (GDP) to catch up with the national average level by the year 2010, Sichuan Governor Zhang Zhongwei said recently.

As to social development, the province will make efforts to control its annual population growth rate under 0.7 percent and make rural average per capita income reach the national average by 2010.

In ten years, the province will expand its urbanization by 30 percent and will establish a comprehensive social security system ensuring most urban residents a well-off life, he added.

To meet the target, Zhang said Sichuan will first accelerate its infrastructure construction to pave the way for future economic take-off.

Sichuan is playing an important role in the country's strategic program to develop western China, he said. Sichuan's population is 30 percent of the total in the western region, covering nine provinces and one municipality, while its GDP accounts for the region's 31 percent and its retail sales take up 32 percent, he noted.
Despite its abundant natural resources and market advantage, the province has yet to make further efforts to cultivate its development potentials, said Zhang.
