Gold holds a special place. It's not like any other "hard asset." People acquire it when confidence wanes in currencies ... as a result there is the obvious temptation of central banks who all want to "have their cake and eat it, too" to not focus on the things which make for a sound currency but look to diminish the alternatives when things get unstable ...
