VG, The conference call disclosures should cause many MSFT shareholders to examine their holdings to decide upon an appropriate investment strategy.

I find myself handicapped when evaluating an outright sell because of taxes. I sold 40% of my holdings last year and was staggered and outraged by the amount that I had to hand over to the Feds. Not to mention, the sizable State contribution.(My State taxes on Gross Earnings and doesn't allow itemized expense nor capital gain reductions.)

Options may be the alternative, via covered calls or buying protective puts. Though I fear put option protection may be too late.

I have followed a long term buy and hold strategy, since 1987, until last year's 40% sale of MSFT stock and another 10% sale this year. That strategy says to buy and hold for the long term unless the fundamentals change. Strike one against this strategy was the DOJ suit. Strike two is the lowering of revenue and EPS estimates. Who knows if there will be a strike three. Perhaps excessive punishment by the judge, a plethora of lawsuits, or PC sales growth actually does flatline in the next year or two.

This weekend will be a time for reflection
