SunSpot - interesting discussion on scale-down. I used to do a lot of real-time programming for specialty microprocessors, and the trade-off between OS size and product cost got drilled into me.

In the handheld world, the difference in memory and processor requirements between WinCE and Palm puts the products in different spaces. Base hardware to support CE costs twice as much and burns the battery 5 times as fast. It's true that CE does a lot of stuff that Palm does not do - but Palm does pretty much everything a PDA OS needs to do. That means WinCE needs to define a business handheld market where more OS can be justified. So far they have not succeeded, but I believe such a market exists. Linux might well be the better choice if that market takes off.

In any kind of embedded application, small is beautiful.
