Dallas-based Ensco International Corp.(AMEX:ESV - news), with a relatively large proportion of ``jackup' rigs active in the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico, noted that its first-quarter earnings, though sharply down from a year earlier, showed a second quarter of sequential improvement.

Dayrates for its Gulf of Mexico jackups rose some 30 percent to $26,045 compared with the final quarter of 1999, with utilization rising to 99 percent from 87 percent.

Dayrates for its jackups in the North Sea and Asia fell, however, and overall utilization of Ensco's jackup fleet fell to 77 percent from 81 in the fourth quarter of 1999, though Chairman and Chief Executive Carl Thorne said he expected those markets to pick up.

``We expect continued improvement in our results over the course of 2000 as our international jackup rigs return to service,' he said in a statement accompanying earnings.
