You gotta love them Midwesterners. I remember when I dug in that earth, for I are a native Illini. Generally, the top foot of soil is fantastically organic loam, the next two feet are still composed of a lot of organics and relatively easy to dig. Beyond that you start to hit a hard pan of clay if you are lucky and a limestone shelf if you are not. The ability of these Vermeers to plow through this shows wicked, impressive mechanical forces mastered in the device. My hats off to the designers of the plow.

This sort of approach really does call for extremely favorable conditions. The absence of drought would have probably resulted in a 15-20% reduction of effort, but were the Aldridge boys to try this same trick in Tarrant County, Texas they would have been cruelly disapppointed and defeated by a remarkably recalcitrant(sic) layer of caliche. God's answer for why we'll never get directly to China. Out here in my own neck of the desert, a plow like this would have been marginal at best. Even the easiest of soil conditions out here often hide Volkswagen sized boulders of basaltic materials. Very nasty on equipment. Not to mention the bluestone shelves that are only moved by explosive means to this day... Ooh la la, Frank I could go on and on. But this is a telecom forum, so I'll get back on topic. Just wait, you'll like the next one.....
