Thanks for an interesting article. I have always enjoyed Greg Easterbrook. Obviously, I do not entirely agree with him. Although it is true that many zygotes do not take, and I have myself contemplated acceptance of the "morning after" pill as part of a grand compromise, I am inclined to register the ambiguity of first trimester abortions by more modest penalties. There is a human organism at stake, and no clear consensus on ensoulment, as it were, and therefore it would be preferable to discourage abortion from the start. On late term abortions, I myself would have opposed Steny Hoyer's language as being too vague and permissive, although I would generally be happy to work with moderate pro-choicers on such issues. Of course, my postition is to thrash these matters out in the state legislatures, which, to my mind, is the benchmark of moderation. Overturning Roe is the moderate position, regardless of one's place on the spectrum........ |
