I think Steven wants YOUR reasoning- I KNOW I do. Confucius is always fascinating- but so much of what you quoted is irrelevant to what we are talking about I wonder WHY you posted it? Set out your own reasoning- step by step- as Steven and I have done. Not the words of OTHERS- do it in your own words, logically- inference to inference.

I will show you what I mean.

1. Humans have been very primitive- some primitive humans have even been studied. Even in primitive culture there were taboos. These taboos are generally against thing like murder, cannibalism, and incest (however incest is defined).

2. These taboos seem to promote social harmony.

3. Do the taboos come from "within"? Were they just "there" waiting to be "listened" to- OR did man codify what worked, after trial and error?

4. If it was "listening" to some inner law- why did man seem to progress step wise in "morality" - the kind of progression one would expect of trial and error- and NOT what one would expect of revealed morality. Unless you want to further complicate the issue by saying the revealer revealed morality step wise- (rather like those creationists who said God "hid" all the fossils. God the jolly prankster?)

5. I've got more but I'll stop here for now.
