I suspect that any technology that is backwardly compatable to cdmaOne will never be considered 3G to them. The W-CDMA specs could have been written in such a way as to make W-CDMA backwardly compatable to cdmaOne but they went out of their way to make sure they are not. Remember the real agenda in the international standards fights is not to come up with a uniform world standard but to gain commercial advantage.
