Castro is too sophisticated for that.

A couple of points

1) Castro is holding Juan's family in Cuba. Dictators can apply pressure in all sorts of ways. One technique is to hurt family members in front other family members.{i.e. children in front of parents and vice versa}

How would you like to get a phone call late some night from Cuba and the voice says, "listen to this."

2) A dictator, I think would only kill a successful defector for military reasons. An out and out killing is too quick to satisfy his desire for revenge.
The defector hurt the leader by defecting and a simple killing isn't dramatic or vengeful enough.

So, it is my opinion that if Juan defected, he would get the late night phone call. Maybe some pictures too. Juan knows this.
