Sega Under ITC Investigation
Hot Info Friday, April 21, 2000 -- 2:00:00 PM By: Lagi

The U.S. International Trade Commission has stated that it's responded to complaints from hardware manufacturer Rambus and is investigating Hitachi and Sega for possible patent infringements. Rambus requested several months ago that the ITC block shipments of memory chips sold in Hitachi and Sega products because of possible infringements.

The ITC said that the focus of the investigation would be on import of SDRAM devices and microprocessor chips, including those contained in Dreamcast consoles.

"By instituting this investigation, the ITC has not yet made any decision on the merits of the case," the commission's statement said. "The ITC will make a final determination in the investigation at the earliest practicable time."

If the ITC finds that Hitachi and Sega are in the wrong, both companies could end up paying a huge amount of money to Rambus in a legal settlement (though the chances of the Dreamcast being pulled off of store shelves are slim to none).
