I agree it should have been done months ago. The whole thing is regrettable. But if we are up for assigning blame then I think the blame for whatever trauma the boy has suffered must be laid in great measure at the feet of the Cuban American community and the Miami Relatives that have defied the rule of law.

I think the government has shown great patience in attempting to resolve the situation through negotiation. It is preposterous to think that the Relatives have any standing that supercedes the right of his father. Elian had in effect been kidnapped by those very relatives that had given him succcor after his rescue from the sea. Yet they would negotiate as if they had rights superior to the father. What are they thinking?

That America is free? That we are a freer country than the country of his origin? That he is better here because there are more toys? Last I looked we are a country of laws. Laws that protect our individual rights and lay before us a wealth of opportunities. Those Relatives in Miami for whatever their reasons would become a law unto themselves. Interesting isn't it that they would leave a dictatorship in Cuba to come here and act like dictators themselves? The US Government today merely reaffirmed its dominion and executed the law.

The regrettable thing in the whole situation is that a six year old boy was ground like grist by highly charged political ideologies that he likely has no understanding of.
