RE: 1st ISPer>>Does anybody know a product to do Gigabit Ethernet traffic monitoring, like CoralReef does for OC3/OC12 [SONET]?

I think Finisar has such a product, called Gigabit Traffic Check. They've got a nice portfolio of "stuff."

I seem to remember one other GbE traffic monitor, but can't recall who.

re: Actually, there are a number of different distance specifications for GbE for various grades of physical media...

Yes indeed! When you hear people say how simple Ethernet/802.3 is, you have to kind of chuckle. I guess it all depends on perspective. At the highest level of packet header field names and sizes, sure. If knowing this makes one an expert, then sure, you could be an expert in 10 minutes. In reality, though, there really aren't many people that are truly expert in all things "Ethernet." That 802.3 spec is over a thousand pages in its latest incarnation of flavors and fragrances. I think most have only sampled the vanilla.

It probably doesn't help matters any that you have to shell out hundreds of dollars to get this spec either.

BTW, a pretty good set of "cliff notes" amazon.com
