-OT- Napster and Universities.

One is Napster, an MP3 swapping site that is, in the eyes of the record companies, the equivalent of a vast flea market of stolen goods

Here's a chronology of events for Yale's actions w.r.t. napster

--Yale confronts growing Napster MP3 quandary--
yaleherald.com

--MP3 Mayhem--
yaleherald.com

--Yale shutting down daytime Napster use--
yaleherald.com

It looks like the napster thing will result in other inconvenienves for other legitimate users at yale

...Upcoming technologies will allow ITS to limit how much each user can transmit

--Recording artists crank up volume against Napster--
nationalpost.com

--Two more schools ban Napster-- [Yale & Indiana, apparently only one is left]
nationalpost.com

Here's an interesting section from the last one.
Mr. King added the lawsuits against Napster are meant to bring attention to music piracy and keep away potential investors that might be interested in the company.

"If you add pressure and shut down Napster [at universities and colleges], then you take the profit motive away from investors," he said.

The University of Southern California is the only remaining educational institution left in the Metallica lawsuit, though talks with the school are ongoing, Mr. King said.

[IMHO] I guess the idea of harassing napster to prevent them from raising capital or going the ipo route is an interesting one, if somewhat sleazy. Perhaps almost as sleazy than providing lock-picking tools or mp3 sharing tools and disavowing any moral responsibility from burglaries or theft.
