The impossible choice - or, was it ?
The impossible arguement; is if a Father; regardless of the political, or socio-economic climate in his native country; has legal rights that are superior to the benefit of the child or the moral issues involved in "all" circumstances.
Given that the average American has absolutely no idea of why thousands of Cuban's have risked, or given their lives to flee for Freedom in America; I think we greatly miss the entire issue here.
It is my understanding that the Father had contacted the Miami family asking them to take care of his Wife & Child as they were on their way to Miami. It is clear in my opinion that the Father "ALLREADY" has given his blessing on his child entering the freedom & opportunity of America.
The most important aspect of this issue in my opinion; is that the Father is NOT expressing his "REAL" personal opinion on this issue - he IS being forced by Castro & Cuba to regain custody of his son Elian & return him to Cuba for political reasons.
...the single most important component to the real story is that the Father has allready made his "real" choice in private in his original communication to the Miami relatives and Clinton/Gore-Reno have poltitically manipulated the situation to make sure that the father did not get the opporutnity to express his REAL personal feelings in American Court, or within our legal process.
The reason the Miami family tried everything possible to have a reunion between Elian & his father in Miami and hopefully at the Families home, or at a neutral site on "free soil" (keyword) vs. on Cuban Diplomatic soil; is that the Father would "then" be free to proclaim his "true" wishes for not just Elian to remain in America, but it would also present an opportunity for him to ask for assylum and to stay in America with his son.
The Cuban's recognized this opportunity and prohibited the Father from ever getting an opportunity to speak his "real" opinion, or to seek personal assylum for himself and his family.
The "key" to this entire impossible debate; is the single issue that the "Father" had allready given his blessing in essence to his son seeking the Freedom of US Soil. He has NOT been allowed to freely speak - as his Cuban Communist handlers have remained at his side and he has been held captive on diplomatic Cuban soil.
The sad point is that this child and the family did not get the "due process" to present this issue that is the most important component that weighs the final impossible decision to the side of Elian remaining free in America.
I think that if America were to see evidence presented in court; that the Father indeed allready gave his blessing to his son seeking freedom in America that Elian would have been allowed to remain in America. Further; I belive the reason Clinton/Reno acted swiftly here is because news is being leaked on the deprogramming boot camps and the real nature of Elian's expected future treatment in Cuba. He will NOT be returning to the normalcy of family life with his Father in their hometown. As America started to learn of the real nature of Elian's future treatment - the support on this issue would have turned rapidly against Clinton/Gore - Reno. This issue weighs heavilly in why, what happened today - happened "today".
It is criminal that this child and the Family in Miami; did not get their day in court and their opportunity for due process. Clinton demanded his day in court to ask what "is - is" and to explain why he really wasn't "lying" when he pointed his finger into the face of America and said "I did not have relations with THAT woman" ... - but, yet denies the same for this child and the Family in Miami.... enough to make me puke ~
Personally; I think Clinton acted through Reno to resolve this issue immediately, so that it could not remain a political issue into the Presidential Election for Gore. Just yet another near socio-pathic, cold-political decision by Clinton to serve his own agenda. I think he could care less about the welfare of this child. I do think that Reno does actually care but, has both sold her soul poltically and is also even more importantly, just blatantly incompetent to make timely hard & swift decisions on ANY difficult political issue.
I think we missed the entire story here; that being that we take for granted on a daily basis what so many have given, or will continue to give their lives for - freedom on American soil...
At the very least; the Family & Elian deserved their day in court just as Clinton himself demanded.
