Neeraj, Motorola maybe 9 months ago announced that they are planning a CDMA based satellite system for mobile phones. I guess they see Iridium as worth launching, but it is really going to be obsolete before fully operational.

Due to heavy market demand, I expect that Iridium will still do okay financially, but it won't be duplicated or maintained, being replaced by Globalstar and Motorola [and others] CDMA based systems.
Globalstar's system is apparently all going very well, on schedule and well timed to benefit from handset developments - efficient chips, aerial systems, GaArsenide, battery technology, software developments and market demand. They better be getting ready to launch a lot more satellites very soon.

I think Iridium are going to operate a hybrid system with satellite to satellite as well as via ground, but due to limited ground sites, they will be greatly dependent of space switching.
