I think the dog pees on your plants! My neighbor's animals pee and poop in my rose beds so that's why I covered spots with Preen, ginger, hot pepper flakes, curry or whatever is hot. We could buy it in bulk at local store so one bag would go a long ways. (Preen kills some weeds. Even the crows don't like it if you mix enough of it in the soil.)
Another trick: moth balls. The rabbits ate my mother's roses so she put moth balls around them. The rabbits ran away.

I know what you mean about expense because Mephistopheles has to see a critical care vet. Right now M climbs stairsteps, not to Heaven, but to a higher dose of heart medicine. We ran out last week so we had to go down the ladder for a few days.
Mephistopheles also has an upper respiratory problem, but vet won't run any tests because it could cost a fortune. He said Mephistopheles might have picked up a venereal disease from another cat. M was a stray b4 we adopted him. He got sick on our back deck and would have died if he had not taken him to animal hospital. He has still whatever it was that made him sick. Most vets just say M has asthma.
This doc wants to see video tape of Mephistopheles problems b4 he runs tests. At the moment, we give him 2 mg antihistamine tablet every night. When it gets bad, he gets cortisone tablets.
Can you make a place for the dog to sit? Then, teach him to sit there.
Irises Your right. They don't like water. I'm not very good with irises, although most of the Siberian Irises that I planted managed to live.
There are beautiful irises on the market now. Many are suppose to bloom twice.
Ornamental grasses
They might do well. You cut them back in the winter.
Cinco's Birthday
Will you have a party for him this year? Last time, you said neighbors brought straw. I didn't cut one of my ornamental grasses back properly so there is straw around the bottom. Do you think Cinco would like a few tasty bits for his birthday?
They might be a treat! I don't know if there is a variation in the taste of straw, but Cinco might know. (g)

PS: The RATS were huge. And yes, someone was bitten while I was there. Also, the rats ate someone's contact lenses. The rats ate a bar of Ivory soap as well.
