Hi, Jim.

There is ongoing posturing over the next generation wireless. The GSM faction wants to believe that they can satisfy demand with the EDGE solution. And, they are hoping that by continuing to deny CDMA, it will either go away or otherwise take so long to get its foot in the door that the licensing costs will be lower.

Maloney's quoted estimate of "80% of the world's digital subscribers" is false on its face, if CDMA garners over 20% of the digital market. Additionally, not all phones will be data-enabled (e.g., those with small screens). He may mean that EDGE might be installed on 80% of GSM phones. But, that's much different from what was quoted.

HDR appears to be the route best taken by the CDMA faction. And I believe it is on track for deployment in approximately the same time frame as EDGE. And HDR will offer much greater capacity than EDGE.

One other point: My understanding is that the 384kbps is a target that may not or probably won't be achieved. Maybe someone can confirm this.

Best,
John
