Sumitomo: Commercialization of White Light-Emitting Diodes

SEI NEWS No.00-01, February 2000

Because the LED chip itself emits white light, the LED lamp manufacturers can produce white LED lamps using their own design and can continue to use their existing LED lamp manufacturing processes, which is not possible with other white LEDs.

This is done by utilizing photoluminescence of ZnSe. The initial application they're targeting is backlights for LCD displays in cellular phones, for which uniform illumination is an important design factor. They don't discuss brightness, so I assume that is not the strength of this approach.
