She says you are never supposed to punish them for coming clean. I sort of agree, but how do you show them that they will be better off telling the truth initially, than lying about it.

In my house we try to separate the consequences. There is one consequence for the initial mistake. Then there is a more harsh consequence for the lying. Hoping they see that the discipline for the mistake is not nearly as bad as they thought it would be, and the discipline for lying is much worse by comparison. Example, My kids are old enough for instance to make them do an extra chore for the mistake, but for instance if one would lie to me now, chances are I would take away their Pokemon cards for a few days.
