I see in my local newspaper today that Congress is close to approving legally binding e-signatures, signatures to contract solely signed on the internet. Verisign, et al have devised a method to make e-signatures unique for the individual signing.

This would seem to clear the way for other legally binding contracts on the internet, LIKE GAMBLING DEBT. Our lawmakers are gradually being forced to acquire a new internet mindset.

I guess the final step will be when all the various e-commerce companies are divided into their respective industries rather than all being lumped as "risky" internet companies. For example, Amazon is a book/record store that allows me to find an item, review critiques, even listen to segments of music, order within a minute (with a ADSL) line, and receive the item often within three days WITHOUT EVER LEAVING MY HOME AT THE SAME OR CHEAPER PRICE THAN LOCAL RETAILERS. This is a monumental competitive advantage. The internet is the facilitator but not the end all and be all.
