Speaking personally, I can say it was almost a "light bulb" experience. When the Iran-Contra hearings began I was a staunch Democrat and was looking forward to seeing Oliver North get his comeuppance. By the time the hearings were winding down I was 100% pro-Ollie. Those Senators revealed their true selves when they leered at North, waved a receipt from a lingerie shop and demanded to know what it was all about. (This was right after the very attractive Fawn Hall had testified) They thought they had him, but he answered by saying the receipt was for leotards for his daughters ballet recital. Their disappointment was palpable.

North comported himself with honor while the Senators and those two counsels they hired were just disgraceful. But I am grateful to them for showing the world the true face of liberalism. Of course, the coup de grace was the Anita Hill debacle, which removed any doubt that liberals can really be malevolent.
