Sudanese presidential, legislative elections in October: official

KHARTOUM, April 23 (AFP) - Sudanese presidential and legislative elections will be held in October this year, the state Omdurman Radio said Sunday quoting the country's electoral chief.

"Both presidential and legislative elections will be conducted in the second half of next October," General Elections Commission Chairman Abdel Monim al-Zain al-Nahas said.

The presidential elections will be held five months ahead of the original date as the present five-year mandate of President Omar al-Beshir expires late in March 2001.

The legislative elections were originally due to take place last month, but Beshir dissolved parliament on December 12, in the wake of a conflict with house speaker Hassan al-Turabi, more than three months before the end of its four-year mandate without setting a date for electing new members.

Turabi was opposed to holding early presidential elections but the ruling National Congress party's leadership council recently decided that the presidential elections would be held ahead of schedule.

Opposition parties have also declared their opposition to such elections before the outcome of a bid for reconciliation with the government to end 17 years of civil war.

Nahas said he had briefed Beshir on Sunday on preparations for the controversial ballots and that his commission had begun updating the electoral registers and seeking funds from the treasury to finance the vote.
