I appreciate your courtesy. I perceive that we disagree about the results, and about the way that the results were obtained. As you say, this is a sensitive issue, and emotions are running high. I posted a few days ago something I had read in one paper, a quote from a minister who also teaches college, about "systemic misunderstanding", which is a term used by anthropologists to describe a situation in which the parties are from such different cultures that no amount of information will make them understand each other. He said, and I agree, that what we have here is systemic misunderstanding. We all look at the same photo, but you see a man aiming a gun at a child, and I see a man aiming a gun at a man who is trying to hide the child. I also see that the man with the gun is telling the man with the child something which I imagine is, "hand over the kid or I'll shoot." I agree that it's a terrible thing, but I don't see a real alternative, other than leaving the kid with Lazaro. |
