The Daily Chartist:
Remembering the Nikkei

Dec. 8, 1999

OK, I promise I won't say a word about how narrow
yesterday's Nasdaq rally was. And I promise I won't mention
how broad the decline on the NYSE was, except to say that if
the rallies were half as broad as the declines, this would be
one heck of a great market.

I am, however, going to respond
to a question I get frequently
these days: "Have you ever seen
this before -- this action we're
seeing on the Nasdaq?"

The answer? Yes. When and where? Ten years ago, but not
in the U.S. -- in Tokyo. Just look at the similarities between
the Nasdaq's chart today and the Nikkei's in 1989.

I figure most of you know how that run in the Nikkei ended.
For those who don't, the high -- just shy of 40,000 --was
during the first week of January 1990. Will the Nasdaq repeat
the Nikkei's performance? I wish I knew the answer to that,
but so far I'm keeping an eye on the similarities.

Good charts also comparing the two indexes.
