Why was the Gonzalez family negotiating if they were so law abiding? What would they need to negotiate if they were in compliance. Why were there so many people in the house? Why were they all dressed? Why were reporters already there?

The answer is clear. They were defying the Federal Government. They were taking unto themselves the right to decide where Elian would reside. It was in direct opposition to the Government. Families that openly flaunt their defiance of the rule of law can expect similar treatment.

Just think of the circus that Elian has at last been removed from. That was no place for a six year old to be growing up.
