Re: How do you know a DDR board will not fit in a standard case?

An early engineering prototype board was tested. It wasn't designed to fit in a standard case - that particular detail has no relevance to anything.

It's performance was somewhat better than a production Rambus board. Which doesn't really tell us much, either. Though, if you'll recall, the early samples of rambus systems were badly beaten by PC100 systems.

DDR SDRAM is now in common use for video cards that certainly aren't 12 layer, (does anyone know if they are even 6 layer which seems to be necessary for Rambus).

The main message from that test so far appears to be: DDR PC systems are in pre-production and samples are circulating, so far they are a little faster than Rambus systems, and most of the evidence is that they will be cheaper than Rambus systems (at least this is what the memory producers are claiming).

That test isn't conclusive of anything, but it's still bad news for Rambus. Remember that the early production rambus boards were actually a little faster than the current boards, but they weren't stable and had to be recalled. Perhaps DDR is at this point and the production systems will actually be slightly slower. OTOH, that odd shaped board sounds more like an early engineering sample, and production boards will more likely be faster than slower.
