I think that the closer a stock goes to zero, the more likely that a short seller will keep the position since covering it would trigger capital gains, and holding it doesn't hurt the bottom line since there's less margin maintenance required due to the reduced share price. Thus, the positions aren't really eating up much capital but are still providing that inevitable ride down to zero. IMO.
