I find it puzzling that conservatives have the idea that if the government becomes a dictatorship that widespread availability of small caliber weapons would stop the process. That is not how dictatorships obtain and hold onto power. The only safety in this regard is institutional. The government needs to be kept divided among different branches and parties while the people jealously guard their freedom of speech, press, and honest elections. Guns (and drugs) are mainly an issue of public health.
