WH - The British Governments winfall receipt from the sale of 3-G licenses at a figure which is now over $30bn has got me thinking that it might be initially a great cuase for celebration as to how bright the civil servants were to negotiate this wonderful bonus for the Exchequer but the fact is that that it is the customers who are going in whole or in large part to land up paying that money.

Alternatively the whole indistry is going to suffer since othrwise those funds would have ended up either as profit thereby gernerating more investment or as more investment or as lower prices or a comination of all three.

Further there is nothing greedier than an ambitious government employee who will not miss a trick to impress his political bosses and we are therefore likely to see a whole slew of these "auctions" around the World. The Spanish have opted for a beauty contest and that may mean that favouritism comes into play but that may be in the end preferable to a world wide extortion racket from the major wireless players.

It is should be crystal clear to any goevernment that cheap and cutting edge wireless telephony is the cornerstone of economic development of modern economies and they should do everything in their power to assist those companies in that market and not try to squeeze them dry as they will kill the golden goose. Difficult for politicians to grasp some of these concepts but I guess if they were capable in that sense they wouldn't be politicans.
