You can close your eyes to the fact that Castro owns all children in Cuba, and takes them away from the parents, many times forever.

It is naive to think that Elian's father has any say in this matter, especially since Castro threatens the well being of Juan Gonzalez's family in Cuba in the balance. Castro and his thugs are pulling all of the strings, including, unfortunately, those in Washington.

If senile old Castro would order Juan to immediately kill his son, Elian would be dead right now.
