Well, it's the People Magazine syndrome, one of the unfortunate side effects of a free press run as a business, where news is an entertainment commodity. Mix in pressure groups and governments with agendas, milking it for all it's worth, and you get these situations. Still, when you look at some of the truly horrifying human dramas, like the drought and famine in Ethiopia just now, one wonders why the Elian thing should even make the news.
