Allen - Will i20 play a role in the network management and switching software for optical networking?

Alan, this is a great question that deserves a thoughtful answer. Let me just say something quick now, and try to get back to it later on when I have time.

George believes in dumb speed as a substitute for any intelligence in the system. If bandwidth is infinite (optical networks with optical switches), then broadcast everything to everybody and simply let them pick off what they want.

My sense is networks need intelligence more than speed. Firewalls, filtering, timing, VPNs, multi-medial formatting, security, high-availability and many aspects of Quality of Service (QoS) have nothing to do with speed, and require lots of smarts. By no means is intelligence going away ever in the enterprise or on the edge. The only issue is the extent to which the need for intelligence can be reduced in the pure optical backbone.
