Hi jim kelley; ECC calculations are typically done in the controller chip, typically, if it is used at all:

developer.intel.com;

I can't immediately think of a modern memory design that has done it any other way, though it may have been done elsewhere a long time ago.

The memory DIMM makers doesn't have to install the 9th memory chip. That means that the reference design can be used for both ECC and non ECC DIMMs.

P.S. MSFT showed some strength at the end. But I still don't feel too good about it, typically the institutional types call it quits about 5 minutes before close, and it is clearly the institutions that were selling MSFT today. Actually, I thought RMBS held up rather well. But AMD!!!
