I thought gains would be from "sales" of securities...which could have been substantial, and could taken place in February or March (or even certain days in April)...not end-of-quarter, April 30 "portfolio total balance)..

I understand your point about last October's reversal (disasterous, I agree)...although I would say that Dell's management's behavior in Q4 '99,'00 (ie. total silence) would be much more forboding...
