Greg "...Handsets will soon be sold for $20 out of vending machines made out of cardboard and be disposable ala cameras..."

forward concepts predicted that by 2005 50% of the handsets in Europe will be prepaid disposables. Europe is already about 80% prepaid; next step is the disposable solution prepaid solution as you suggest

the prepaid disposable, however, does not account for the third generation handset. prepaid disposables will be principally voice only activated and will probably handle limited data on a very, very limited basis.

operators can't make it if they spend $26 billion on 3g auctions (as was done in the UK) and bank their future on disposables. the 3g auctions are about data and selling robust $100-$300 handsets that can handle lots of it.
