I am deeply disturbed about this entire episode. Anybody in the tech industry should be as well.

Sun is giving away StarOffice for free (and losing money) with the express goal of stealing business from MSFT Office. Are they guilty of unfair business practices? Marc Andreeson, the idiot, scorned MSFT and their future in the internet world (i.e. "somebody has to write printer drivers"). Is it surprising that MSFT would take aggressive steps when the entire industry was counting them as dead? Because of competitive pressure, MSFT has had to continually lower prices and remain competitive. Remember when an OS cost $200. Now an OS + Office Suite costs < $100. The OS market is mature, and nobody expects MSFT to be able to continue to make big $$ with their OS. We have a playing field that is quickly leveling, and an excellent arena for competition.

However, I fear that the entire tech sector is going to be decimated by this unfortunate decision. Cicso and Intel are next on the anti-trust radar, then lookout AOL. This is the future of hi-tech startups. If you are too successful, you will be picked clean by states trying to raise revenue without raising taxes, and class-action litigation lawyers.
