You are right that Elian is suffering from a backlash against immigrants in this country. I have heard people complain about the boy in that context in Seattle. I also think that people are sincere in their belief that the boy needs his father. Although I am not so sure about the sincerity of all the posters on this board in that regard. My supervisor just this morning expressed his concern about the heavy handed tactics of the Justice department and in particular Bill Clinton. But, he followed that with his belief that a son should be returned to his father. When I told him what the boy would face upon returning home his expression changed and he said, "I didn't know that". That news changed the equation for him. Frankly I was surprised I needed to explain it, he knows what communism is about. I guess the emotional side of the argument clouded his thought process. I am not ready to concede that torture is in Elian's future, however. I do think he will be reprogrammed as the Castro Government has promised. He will then be given back to the communist party in his home to continue his training and no doubt chop sugar cane or harvest tobacco. And he will be denied freedom that far too many in this country take for granted. Oddly enough, a great many people who are in favor of the boy returning to Cuba are the first to scream bloody murder when as much as a proposal to curtail a freedom is mentioned much less carried out. It's amazing how fast the protests and grievances are filed when the slightest comfort might be infringed upon in the land of the free. Lastly, striking hard against the enemies of freedom and those that bask in their foolishness is that Casto's own daughter defected to this country. And, she has gone on record stating that the boy will be better off here than going to the island slave state of her father's. That's about as straight from the horse's mouth as we are going to get. IMO sorry to get back to you so late with this response but I just checked in at SI this afternoon after a long weekend. As sad as my current portfolio is at this moment is pales in comparison to the low point we find ourselves in this country at this time in so many ways. Can our own enslavement be that far away? Did you hear what the comedian Chevy Chase said about Cuba, socialism and our country? Little wonder people have and are willing to sell their birth right for a bowl of soup. Wallyb
