Shipments of Intenet appliances to take off by 2004, firm says
Apr 24, 2000 --- Shipments of Internet appliances will increase 15 fold by 2004, according to Cahners In-Stat Group, heating up the market for both equipment manufacturers and semiconductor suppliers.
In a market comprised of TV-based Internet appliances, Web phones and Internet terminals, the Scottsdale, Ariz., research firm predicts in a recent report that Web phones will lead the overall growth with an estimated five-year Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 202 percent.
While the more established TV-based Internet appliances will experience a strong upswing, In-Stat predicts that as alternative Internet appliances emerge, the TV-based market will erode. Internet terminal shipments will beat TV-bases appliances in a few years, the firm believes, after already surpassing Web phone shipments by the end of this year.
In the report, ?Line-Powered Internet Appliances: The New Frontier for Boxes & ICs,? In-Stat also predicts sales of line-powered appliances will swell to more than 37 million units by 2004, up from more than two million in 1999. The increase in shipments will drive sales of $1.9 billion in microprocessor and memory devices, according to the company?s forecast, and AOLTV boxes will take off in the next five years, threatening the Web TV market.
