Mike, here's a company that seems to compete with Vari-L. Don't know how there product stacks up, but they seem to have a similar role of customers.
I'd be interested to know a little more about them and why VARL has a better product if anyone would care to comment.

Micronetics Announces First Sales of Components for Fiber Optic Applications
HUDSON, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 14, 2000--Micronetics Wireless, Inc. announced today that its Micronetics/VCO Products Group received initial orders to supply voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) to improve length of transmission with less signal degradation in a fiber optic application.
