SAN JOSE, Calif., May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Amati Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: AMTX) has released the following information as background on the GTE ADSL trial announcement.
GTE (NYSE: GTE) announced today that it has launched two additional high-speed Internet access trials using Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) technology involving Duke University, Durham, N.C. and Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind.
Collectively the two new trials involve 70 participants, including 30 at Duke University and 40 at Purdue University. Both trials utilize ADSL/DMT modems from Amati and one other vendor's ADSL modem.
GTE also announced that it will expand its high-speed Internet access and remote office connectivity trial involving Microsoft Corp. by 1,000 employees, making it the largest trial of its kind in the world. The new trial participants will be added over the next several months. A decision as to what equipment will be used to support the expanded Microsoft trial will be made at a later date.
In the previously announced Redmond, Wash. trial begun last summer, more than 100 area businesses plus 130 employees from Microsoft and GTE have been using the lightning-fast ADSL systems for various applications including access to the Internet and private data networks using Microsoft's Windows NT-based servers. In addition, the trial has included high-speed modems from Amati.
