I have no desire to re-visit the pre-standardized computing environment. Before IBM's PCs and Microsoft's Windows, I faced compatability issues ranging from the OS, hardware, and floppy formats and the bother was a royal pain in the arse.
Today, I can go to the store and find long shelves filled from top to bottom with hardware and software I can take home and run on my PC. I can buy, install, and run packages without concern. I can download stuff too. All without needing a support staff or worrying about wether I can get it to go.
The company which eliminated the hassles of dealing with a 'mixture' of suppliers has earned the position of being the first choice among consumers who value their time and convenience; hence, a leadership position in the marketplace naturally follows. Tinker with this and we all revert to another pre-Microsfoft computing mess. Sure, some current Microsoft competitors get their foot in the door where they wouldn't otherwise. For them, the changes are welcome. For everyone else, more annoyances, more spent, and less received.
